A Quick Guide to Lumens and Camping Lights

Choosing the right camping lights ensures safety and enjoyment on your outdoor adventures. Here’s a brief guide to help you pick the best options:

What are Lumens? Most camping lighting options come with a Lumen rating. Lumens (lm) measure how much light a bulb or other light source gives off. The more lumens, the brighter the light. For example, a candle is around 12 lumens, a 200 lumen headlamp is good for reading, and a 1000 lumen lantern is great for lighting up a whole campsite.

Types of Lighting

  • Lanterns typically range from 100 to 1000 lumens. Great for lighting up the campsite and larger areas. The Wild Land Galaxy Solar LED Powered Light has different lights and multiple light settings, up to a max 1400 lm.
  • Headlamps usually range from 50 to 500 lumens. Ideal for hands-free tasks, are light and very portable but don’t light up larger areas so well.
  • Flashlights or Torches range widely from 50 to over 1000 lumens. Great for focused light and getting about in the dark. The Perfect Image 300lm Torch is an affordable torch option.
  • String Lights generally range from 10 to 100 lumens per bulb to create more ambient campsite lighting.

Things to Consider

  • Personal Preference – some people prefer brighter lights, and others softer lighting.
  • Group Size – large groups might require more lumens to make sure there’s enough light for everyone.
  • Environment – you’ll probably need brighter lights for forests or overcast conditions compared to open areas.
  • Activity Type – reading in your tent, hunting at night, cooking? Think about what tasks you'll be doing and match the light source and lumens accordingly.

Power Sources

  • Batteries are reliable and easy to replace, but can be expensive and will run out of power.
  • Rechargeable batteries like the Black Diamond 1500 are a great eco-friendly, cost-effective power source but require charging.
  • Solar-Power is environmentally friendly but relies on sunlight which might not always be around.
  • Gas-Powered lights are very bright but a heavier option and require fuel.

Thinking more about your lighting needs and the lumens required for different activities means you can have a great camping experience. If it’s ambient lighting for your tent, lighting for cooking, or high-intensity lighting for night hikes and hunts, choosing the right lumens will help you get the most out of your outdoor adventures.
